Wiggins Fine Books

With Loyalist ancestry and as a Mayflower descendant, Duane Stevens has had a diversified career in real estate, banking, and bookselling.  A UMass Amherst graduate, he received a Preservation Merit Award from the Historic Albany Foundation for a residential property in the Mansion neighborhood in Albany, New York.  He has recently finished the construction of a book, print and map gallery at his home in Shelburne Falls.

From managing an inner city condominium property to researching his family roots attention to detail has been his focus.  Another strength is accurate and thorough research, having appraised commercial property on a national level while working in New York City, and most recently, serving a loyal group of banking clients in the Berkshires.

Bookselling and the rigors of establishing edition and value points has been a natural progression for Duane after his many years of real estate market research.  Since 2006 he has operated Wiggins Fine Books and has developed an online bookselling presence along with participating in many book fairs in Boston and New York City along with smaller venues.  He consistently takes the personal approach, from delivering a book to a client to visiting with book and book arts professionals in their workplaces.  This approach has enabled him to bring the Northampton area one of the most diversified, interesting and inclusive book and book arts fairs to take place in many years.    Bringing the best book and book arts professionals together is but Duane’s latest effort at paying attention to the small details while producing a show that the fair goer will appreciate.   He looks forward to meeting old friends at the show along with making new ones, including collectors, rare book curators, and book lovers of all ages.

The fair will feature a round-table discussion with curators of special collections from the 5-College libraries. Participants include: Leslie Fields, Head of Archives & Special Collections at Mount Holyoke College, Karen Kukil, Associate Curator of Special Collections at Smith College, and Robert Cox, Head of Special Collections and University Archives at University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

“There is no end to the designs, illustrations, materials, texts, genres, and fascination of fine press books.  For more than 150 years, they have been produced--and seriously collected.  This round-table will look at private and institutional collecting of these amazing books,” says moderator and rare book librarian Sidney Berger.  An opening reception will follow at the Campus Center Wilson Atrium.
