Messenger Press is the imprint of book artist and printmaker Valerie Carrigan. She works out of her art studio in a renovated historic mill in North Adams, MA where she produces prints and artist books. Through monotype, relief and letterpress printing, she explores the intersection of the natural world and the human spirit. Valerie also designs handmade journals which are sold locally through MASS MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art).
Valerie was selected by the Maine Media Workshops + College as their first Book Artist in Residence this fall. She just completed a six-week residency program in their new Book Arts and Letterpress Printing Studio on their campus in Rockport, Maine. The studio houses exceptional book arts equipment including Vandercook proofing presses, multiple book presses, a photopolymer plate maker, composing stone and base, and much more. As part of the program, Valerie donated at least one piece from the residency to the Maine Media Gallery to benefit a scholarship fund. She also gave a public lecture on her work, in addition to hosting several open studios for the community.
Valerie’s work has been exhibited widely in galleries and museums throughout the United States and abroad, including PRESS Gallery, North Adams, Massachusetts. Her work is in the special collections of many university libraries, including Smith College. She has lectured, given workshops and taught classes at a variety of colleges and book arts programs, including IS183 Art School of the Berkshire.
